Bio

Hello there! I’m a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), where I both teach and pursue quantitative empirical research as a social psychologist.
I’m broadly interested in topics related to emotions and well-being, and I occasionally also dabble in other topics broadly under the field of social and personality psychology.

However, my primary expertise and interest lie in the domain of mixed emotions. I’ve spent my academic career puzzling, obsessing, and being utterly enamoured over mixed emotions in part because mixed emotions have defined so much of my life.
Outside of my academic work, I love experiencing heartfelt fictional stories (often taking the form of video-games, movies, TV shows, or animes), and I always find the ones full of bittersweetness, full of both beautiful and painful emotions intertwined, to be the most poignant and memorable. I feel incredibly ambivalent about life and the world too. For most of us, life isn’t completely rosy, and it does come with many inevitable setbacks, sorrows, and losses. The reality too is that there is much that is dark and dreary about the world.
Yet though we navigate the inevitability of murk and gloom in life and the world, still we try to find humour amid dark times, still we discover things to rejoice, to celebrate, and to love, and still we discover the little things to appreciate and that give us hope. I’ve been curious about mixed emotions for a long time because of how real they are for me, and because I don’t think any other emotional phenomena are a better representation of the messiness of life.
This curiosity has guided my academic pursuits so far, and I hope to continue my research to try to unravel the mysteries of mixed emotions and their implications.
